July 8: Hunting for waste on the seabed of the Gulf of Mondello. Here comes the second edition of “Underwater Cleaning” #UWC23
PALERMO – Hunting for waste on the seabased of the Gulf of Mondello. The initiative Underwater cleaning 2023 returns on Saturday July 8 to clean up the sea of the renowned Mondello beach in Palermo.
This is the second edition, following the success of the success of the first edition held last year, wich saw hundreds of volunteers and “friends of the sea” equipped with fins, masks and disposable gloves collecting tons of waste of all kind from the seabed of Mondello: from plastic and glass bottles to plastic bags and even truck tires.
#UWC23 is once again conceived, planned, and organized by Owac Engineering Company (Open Water Company), a Palermo-based engineering firm operating in the environmental sector with a green focus, developing circular economy projects that have a real positive impact on people’s lives and the planet.
“Maintaining success is much harder than achieving it. But we, from a professional standpoint, enjoy challenges and competition. With this event, we want to contribute to cleaning our fantastic gulf by removing all kinds of waste from its seabed, also trying to engage everyone, especially the younger generations, in respecting the marine ecosystem and caring more for the environment,” says CEO and engineer Rocco Martello, a practicing sportsman and former Italian spearfishing champion in 1996. “Owac always emphasizes the second part of its motto ‘ACT circular’ by getting out of the office and taking practical and concrete action for the environment, including with its own team.”
#UWC23 is organized in partnership with “Club I Canottieri Roggero di Lauria,” sponsored by Asja Ambiente Italia spa, and under the patronage of ISPRA (Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) and the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Sicilia, with operational support from Rap, Water Experience, “Fratelli della Costa,” Acquatica-Apnea Team, and Dive 4 Earth.
PROGRAM
On Saturday, July 8, at 3:30 PM, a briefing will be held at the base camp, located at the Punta Celesi pier. From there, the underwater collection teams will proceed to the collection sites in the sea and along the beach up to Mondello village.
The collection sites have been defined after several surveys, taking into account both the quantity of waste present and the depth. Teams with varying capabilities will be formed based on the difficulty of recovery. The teams will operate within the area prohibited to boats, marked by red buoys in line between the Punta Celesi pier and the port of Mondello village. The collected waste will be brought back to the base camp at the Punta Celesi pier.
The event will be 100% green, using only human-powered means such as SUPs, canoes, and other similar equipment. Return is expected by 7:00 PM.
THE UNDERWATER ROV IN THE GULF’S WATERS
Owac will provide, upon request, video footage of the seabed’s condition, thanks to images captured during the survey conducted by Owac’s underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). Any pre- and post-event interviews can be arranged at the base camp (Punta Celesi pier).
